Chapter 18

Toby

Maddie let out a long, defeated breath and turned her face back up toward the ceiling. I lay down beside her, inching across the mattress so my body was close to hers and our heads just touched. It was a familiar kind of connection that struck me with its intimacy. I was surprised to be able to feel so close to her and so bonded just lying together this way. None of my other relationships had ever had this type of feeling. Not that I had a huge array of former girlfriends to compare the feeling to. But in those few instances, I’d never felt this level of comfort, contentment, and acceptance. It was wonderful, but it also meant the tugging feeling as I realized she’d be leaving soon. I wasn’t going to get to hide her away from the rest of the world and keep her all to myself as I dreamed.

“So, what’s your plan?” I asked after a few seconds of contemplative silence.

I rolled onto my side and rose up on my elbow so I could look down at her. Even just like that, she was so beautiful. She gazed up into my face and shook her head. Her shoulders lifted and fell against the bed just slightly.

“I’m not sure,” she admitted. “It’s all coming so fast. Honestly, as much as I’m not looking forward to this, I probably shouldn’t wait. The longer I delay, the more awkward it’s going to get and the higher the chances of something happening.”

A long breath seemed to deflate Maddie, and she moved closer so that she was pressed up against me. I didn’t ask what she meant when she said there were higher chances of something happening. She didn’t have to say it for me to understand what she was trying to say. I didn’t want the details. Not right now. If I had to listen to her describe what she worried Craig could do to her little sister, it would force me to confront what he did to her, and that wasn’t something I could handle. I didn’t trust myself if I had that information. It was enough to just know she was worried about Megan and didn’t want to think of her in a situation like what she’d gone through.

“What do you want to do?” I asked.

“I’m going to book a flight as soon as I can be ready, take a couple days off, and go back to Kansas to confront my sister. Another good thing about me getting it done as soon as possible is I can get there while Craig is still in New York. I really don’t need him to be there when this all goes down,” she said.

“You decide when you want to go, and we’ll get the plans in place. I’m sure something can be arranged at work to cover for us,” I told her.

Maddie propped herself up and looked at me, her expression confused.

“Us?” she asked.

I nodded matter-of-factly. “I’m coming with you.”
